Behind the Books at David & Charles…We wanted to introduce you to the talented team that create the books our customers have come to know and love – we think they’re fantastic (but of course we’re biased) so we thought we’d share a little bit about them, so you can see how brilliant they are too. First up, is our amazing Publishing Director, Ame Verso.
- Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at David & Charles?
I’m Ame Verso and I’m the Publishing Director at David & Charles. I am a keen maker – I stitch, sew and crochet, and in lockdown, I took up macramé and had my first bash at watercolour painting. I’m happiest when I am making things (or swimming in the sea). My role at D&C is to lead and oversee the publishing programme, identifying trends, seeking out talent and gaps in the market, and then working with our amazing team to turn those ideas into beautiful books.
2.Tell us about one of the titles you’re currently working on?
We’re very close to sending Creative Polymer Clay to print. I’m excited about this book because the craft has really come on leaps and bounds in recent years. It’s such an amazing medium that allows you to experiment with colour, texture and pattern – and can all be done from the kitchen table with very little outlay on materials. The author, Heidi Helyard, is a brilliant designer who has a real talent for teaching her skills, and the book is just total eye-candy!
3.Tell us one thing you love about working at David & Charles?
The company is extremely special to me as it’s been part of my life for over 30 years. I was 10 years old when my mother’s first book was published by David & Charles – who would have believed that all these years later I would be among the team running it?! I feel so lucky to get to spend my working day in such a creative environment – collaborating with a really bright team in-house but also with astonishingly talented authors from all over the world – all from our base in beautiful Devon. It’s a dream job!
If you have a craft, art, or wellness book idea, Ame is often one of the first people you’ll meet at David & Charles, she’ll help you build the book’s concept, from project to project, start to finish.
If you enjoyed reading about Ame’s role here at David & Charles, keep an eye out next month for our second installment of “Behind the Books”. In our next edition, you’ll meet James, our Managing Director.
