About

David and Charles was originally founded on 1st April 1960 by David St John Thomas and Charles Hadfield. It first made its name publishing titles on Britain’s canals and railways but quickly became a leader in illustrated non-fiction, publishing across numerous categories.

The original company was based in the old railway station building in Newton Abbot and as the business expanded, the company took over the locomotive shed for use as a warehouse. While that building no longer exists, and the business is now based in Exeter, the windows of the old shed are captured in our logo emblem.

We are an open, entrepreneurial and collaborative business and always welcome new ideas. You can contact us by email at hello@davidandcharles.com
