David and Charles Ltd is a leader in illustrated non-fiction publishing with a focus on art, craft and wellbeing categories. From our base in Exeter, Devon, we publish around 50 new titles each year, which are distributed globally, as well as operating online education partnerships with high-profile brands.
We have a relaxed and friendly working environment with very little hierarchy and all staff are encouraged to contribute ideas that might help in our success. We have adopted a hybrid home and office-based working pattern and are happy to be flexible in this approach. We offer attractive benefits, including income protection and life insurance policies, and optional private medical. We offer 25 days holiday (or equivalent) per annum plus Bank Holidays.
Pre-Press Designer (Permanent, Full Time)
£24,500 per annum, plus benefits.
Pynes Hill, Exeter (Hybrid working)
We’re looking for a Pre-Press Designer to join our in-house content team on a permanent, full-time basis. The successful candidate will be primarily focused on the preparation of files for printing, following the design stages, although there are multiple aspects to the role.
Reporting to the Senior Designer, the Pre-Press Designer will manage a busy workload including book repro, archive management, as well as file conversions and reprints. They will also work on additional tasks such as design corrections and book jacket layouts, as well as providing support to the sales and marketing teams for the creation of sales materials.
We are a small team and outsource a proportion of design work, including pre-press, so part of this role involves the coordinating of external resource, alongside their own workload. Excellent organisation and communication skills are a must.
We’re looking for someone with:
- A keen attention for detail.
- A sound knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and print production processes.
- The ability to take ownership of their workload.
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- At least 2 years’ experience in a similar role.
- Experience of Biblio and Trello (desirable but not essential).
To apply, please send a CV and covering letter to: hello@davidandcharles.com
Closing date for applications: 15th May 2023.
Work Experience at David and Charles
We have an open door to offer work experience opportunities for young people who are interested in learning more about our business. Due to the various requirements and date constraints of school work experience and degree-level course modules, we do not have a one size fits all approach. Work experience of up to one week is typically unpaid. For working periods of 2+ weeks, treated as an internship, we are happy to pay for time worked. College or University funding support for longer internships is also welcome.
As a business that has moved to hybrid working, it can be more difficult to ensure that a work experience placement is valuable to the student. Our experience has been that to get the most out of work experience at David and Charles, students need to be able to attend the office and commit to a period of at least 3 days of work at any time. We have been increasingly asked to accommodate work experience that is only remote, and sometimes spread over several weeks with occasional days and half days. It is difficult to offer a good experience for such a sporadic pattern.
We are a small business and our availability for work experience can depend on business factors such as staff holiday time, our industry event calendar, and workload, as well as any commitment we have already made to other placements and internships.
To enquire about work experience, please contact hello@davidandcharles.com with your CV, and cover letter. You should give an indication of your preferred dates and any particular interest you have in our company or department, such as editorial and design, sales and marketing, production or general operations.
